Russian submarines, quietly operating in the waters of the Atlantic and the Arctic represent a «threat» to military supplies, the US’s European allies in NATO, writes The Wall Street Journal, citing the statement of the Alliance leadership and military experts. According to the newspaper, to counter the «Russian threat» NATO intends to reorganize the command structure and to allocate additional funds for the protection of the Arctic and Atlantic waters in the event of a possible conflict.
NATO may resume military-sea command during the cold war to prevent «the increased activity of Russian submarines in the Arctic» and «to protect the Atlantic routes in the event of a conflict», said the journalist of The Wall Street Journal’s Julian Barnes citing data from the officials of the Alliance. Discussions on this topic indicate that NATO concentrated on improving the defence from
«resurgent Russia», despite the fact that the administration trump calls for more focus on the fight against terrorism.
According to Barnes, the main military representatives of NATO countries gathered this week in Brussels and discussed the reorganization of the command structure. According to military experts, the Russian submarine fleet increasingly able to operate in the Arctic and North Atlantic without detection. The development of strategies for the protection of the Atlantic sea routes gained importance in the framework of plans for the transportation of heavy weapons from the US to Europe in case of confrontation with Russia. According to experts, the Russian submarine fleet can «make it difficult to protect American convoys.»
Researchers from the Washington-based Center for a new American security reported, the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg about the «war challenges» in the Arctic and the Atlantic. They have demonstrated results in the simulation, in which the Russian submarine suspend military exercises of the Alliance, attack on the U.S. transport ship, cut the undersea cable between Iceland and Canada and thus disrupt global communications. The NATO command, which will deal with these problems, can develop military plans for «overcoming threats» and push the allies to make a significant investment in reconnaissance aircraft, ships and other military equipment, writes the author of the material.
«We have to assess potential threats from all sides, including in the North Atlantic and the Arctic,» said the General of the army of the Czech Republic and the head of the NATO military Committee Peter Paul. NATO plans to reorganize the military command in February 2018. However, until then diplomats must figure out who the members of the Alliance will take command, what are its specific responsibilities and its location.
The United States has allocated money to upgrade the airbase at Keflavik, however, according to researcher at the Center for a new American security Jerry Hendrix, for the Atlantic and the Arctic are needed to «patrol boats, submarines and more aircraft.» If Russian submarines are able to discreetly swim through the waters of Iceland, they can «threaten shipments to the US European allies.» If the US will not be able to put the technique into Europe, then NATO will be weakened, said Hendricks. «The investments we do is extremely important to ensure victory in any future conflict», — concluded the expert.
