The Network published a new breathtaking images of «icy moon» of Saturn

Automatic interplanetary station of the European space Agency and the National Aeronautics and space administration (NASA) Cassini passed several new images showing the dual nature of Enceladus — an icy moon of Saturn.

Some pictures can be seen of the Northern region of the «moon» of Saturn, which, in turn, is heavily populated with craters and geysers. In the South, on the contrary, the terrain is more flat and smooth.

This sharp division actually does not imply that the South are subject to less influence by any percussive elements.

«Rather, geological activity in the South, including the famous «loop» over the South pole, can equate existing craters, leaving behind a younger and smoother the surface,» officials at NASA.

«Cassini» started to produce substantial survey of this space object even in 2016, when the probe was at a distance of 66 000 km from Enceladus. Each pixel in the resulting image covers about 398 meters. According to recent observations, the North of Saturn’s moon rose and turned four degrees to the right.

The diameter of Enceladus is 504 kilometers. The satellite contains a vast ocean of water under its icy surface layer. Scientists believe that the ocean is in contact with a rocky mantle of the moon of Saturn, show various chemical reactions. For this reason, astrobiology think Enceladus is the best analogue of the conditions of life other than Earth in the Solar system. Another candidate is updated the Jupiter satellite Europa, which is a subsurface ocean.

The geysers of Enceladus even stronger appeal as the hunt for extraterrestrial life. This is due to the fact that these geysers emit a certain material from an underground sea into the space, therefore, the robotic probe may take a sample of this potentially habitable environment, not even touching her.

The final Cassini mission is nearing completion. According to official information, in September of this year the spacecraft will make a deliberate dive into the cloud tops of Saturn, to avoid further destruction from pollution. Thus, the study between the atmosphere of Saturn and its inner ring to be completed. As reported, Cassini will end its mission September 15.
